Oak Bay is divided into six distinct sub-districts: Uplands, Estevan, Henderson, South Oak Bay, North Oak Bay, and Gonzales. The Uplands, often referred to simply as "the Uplands," is a 188.17-hectare (465-acre) neighborhood situated in the northeastern part of Oak Bay, bordered by Cadboro Bay and North Oak Bay. It is renowned as an iconic garden suburb, developed in the early 20th century as an example of landscape-centric community planning. In 1907, Uplands was acquired for $275,000 by developers John A., Robert, and Dawson Turner, former cattle and horse ranchers from Turner Valley, Alberta, with roots in Scotland. They engaged the celebrated landscape architect John Olmsted to design the community. Olmsted, known for his influential work on parks and neighborhoods throughout North America, envisioned Uplands as a model of suburban beauty. The neighborhood today stays true to his vision, featuring estate-sized lots, gracefully winding streets, and its distinctive green, globe-topped, ornate lamp posts. The homes in Uplands are grand and elegant, surrounded by meticulously maintained gardens. John Olmsted himself once regarded Uplands as “unquestionably the best adapted to obtain the greatest amount of landscape beauty in connection with suburban development.”
